Why the June 30 FEC deadline is an important moment for our campaign
I want to be direct with you, because this is an important moment.
At midnight on June 30, we hit the first end-of-quarter FEC deadline of the general election.
You probably heard me mention these FEC deadlines before, but this one is different. Here’s why: Every quarter, federal law requires us to report what we’ve raised, and the FEC posts it for the whole world to see.
This is the first time those numbers will be made public since the general election began. In many ways, this is the first real scorecard of the race.
So the number we put up on June 30 isn’t just a number. It’s what tells Jon Husted, the national press, and working folks across Ohio whether this campaign has what it takes to win.
That’s why we’ve set a big goal: $3 million by midnight on June 30.
I know that’s a lot. It’s the highest grassroots goal we’ve ever set, and more than we’ve ever asked of this team. But Republicans are spending a combined $103 million to defeat me. In fact, it was just leaked that a secret dark-money group is already prepping to drop another $20 million against me in July. We need the resources to fight back. As soon as our report goes public, here’s who will be reading it …
Jon Husted and his dark-money backers. If our numbers look weak, they’ll read it as a green light to flood Ohio’s airwaves even more – millions in attack ads, up before we can even answer them. The Senate Leadership Fund and the Koch network have already pledged tens of millions to stop our momentum. A weak report tells them their attacks are working.
The national press will use it to decide whether Ohio is still a competitive race. The polls show this race is statistically tied, and election groups are calling Ohio a Toss-Up, but a strong report on June 30 keeps reporters focused on our race. We can use that coverage to surge even more and spread our message further.
And folks like you will be watching, too. You’ll want to know whether your five dollars, your twenty-five dollars, or your Saturday volunteering actually moved something – whether this is still worth it.
It is.
We just have to show it on June 30.
So I’m asking: If you’re able, will you chip in $25 – or whatever feels right to you – to help us reach $3 million before midnight on June 30? It’s the most direct thing you can do today, June 29, to help us boost our odds in Ohio.
In solidarity,
Sherrod
A personal note from Sherrod 👋
There’s nobody fighting for Ohioans in the U.S. Senate right now, and I won’t sit on the sidelines while hardworking families get screwed over by Washington politicians serving themselves.
If you work hard, you should be able to afford a decent life. But the reality is, life is too expensive. Costs are going up. Wages are staying stagnant. Working people are working harder than ever before, and they’re not getting their share of the profit.
This campaign is all about changing that – and election analysts say we have a strong shot at winning in November.
But I’ll need your help to pull it off. My opponent is a Washington insider being propped up by the Republican establishment, and he’s got virtually unlimited resources.
That’s not how our campaign works. We’re a grassroots movement, and that means we rely on ordinary people chipping in a couple bucks - not billionaires or corporate special interests. If you’re able, please make a donation of any amount today. It could be what helps us flip Ohio and the Senate.

I love what you stand for and how well you articulate your goals, and I really want you back in the Senate - BUT - do you HAVE to ask for money? I do not live in Ohio. I get 10 texts a day asking for money for races in other states. It’s getting so I dread opening up my texts. Now Substack too? The Democratic Party is guilt-tripping me.
Put your website on the message. People know you need money. If they want to donate, they will. But I am widow on a fixed income and I have $50,000 in medical bills a year. I live in a purple state and probably am giving too much money to my candidates as it is. (That would include an admonishment from my kids.)
We have to come up with a better way to deal with the bleeping billionaires. We can’t outspend them.
I really am sick of every elected official race being all about money. I am overwhelmed with the pressure to donate! When did this become so imperative? I don’t care about how much $$ a candidate has in their race and neither should the party. It has to be about the issues! You’ve always had my support. Let Husted broadcast his lies. We know his voting record. He’s corrupt.
